I’m Working on a Produciton of The Boy Friend

Couples walk behind the leads to fill the stage during a beach scene. We live in conservative-ville, Ohio, and have to be careful about our audience. During practice yesterday, a few girls had to leave early, so two boys walked across stage as a couple. Everyone thought it was fantastic!

At the end of rehearsal, we run a character workshop where random chorus members are asked about their characters’ backgrounds (fabricated as they are non-named roles). We asked one boy if he had any siblings, he said yes and indicated one of the two boys who had walked across stage together. Without thinking, the questioner asked if the brothers had ever fought over a girl before. He answered without missing a beat that “actually, my brother just came out.”

It was a great moment, and it’s great to know our cast is accepting!

So, instead of saying, “Nah, we’ve never fought over a girl.” He chooses to out his brother instead. Neato.
